INSTRUCTIONAL GOOSE HUNTING

Darrel Wise, Waterfowl Guide and Outfitter Alberta Canada, Goose & Duck GuideAbout Darrel Wise

As a young boy, Darrel was an avid duck hunter who had a burning desire to learn to hunt the big birds—Honkers. His dad was not a goose hunter so he had no source for the required know-how.  He started a search for a mentor while in his teens and was very fortunate to meet an older (then age 78) gentleman, who’s name was Lyle Warming. Lyle had developed some unique skills and methods and was willing to share his knowledge.  Darrel paid close attention on that first, and each subsequent trip with Lyle and has since added an entire inventory of his own special little tricks. Total all this up and throw in 35 plus years of experience and today he’s got a bag of tricks that give him a real edge in his outfitting operation (which is his life’s love.)

Darrel feels that the technique that was taught him as a young boy has provided him with more thrills and enjoyment than any other single happening in his life.  That is why his goose hunting program is called instructional goose hunting.  He wants to share his knowledge with you and guarantees to make you a better goose hunter!  Think of a three- day guided hunt as three-day seminar in high end hunting techniques.  The knowledge gained is yours...no one can take it away from you and with that newfound knowledge you will consistently take more birds for the rest of your hunting days.  How do you put a value on something like that?

Darrel’s call to fame in the world of goose hunting is, of course, his Real-Geese decoys. They were the first commercially produced silhouette decoys with multi positions and realistic artwork.  They have definitely changed the way most hunters think about silhouette decoys and the thousands of them in the grain fields of the world have added greatly to the hunting successes of their owners and for that, Darrel is very happy.  He also acknowledges the form of complement and flattery paid by the many people and companies who have sprang up with similar decoys, but as is generally the rule, you just can’t beat the original.  Darrel says there is a lot more to making a good decoy than just taking a picture and reproducing it on a substrate.  Case in point, the new Pro-Series decoys.  They will definitely change the face of goose hunting for the next millennium.

Darrel is thankful for the opportunity to have contributed something to the wonderful world of water fowling with his decoys, but his greatest personal pleasure comes from seeing the smiles on the faces of the first time Honker hunters, and knowing that they are going to be better, more successful goose hunters for the rest of their lives as a result of their learning experience with him. The quality time spent between fathers and children while on a hunting vacation with Darrel is certain to become one of their lifelong best memories. Darrel is proud of the fact that many people who have hunted the world, but hadn’t experienced Honkers over decoys have told him that it was their greatest hunting experience ever. That is what his personal goal on every hunt is...to give you the best hunting memory of your life.  A tall order, but one that is very often filled!  The editor of the largest waterfowl publication once called him the  “King of Close.”   Darrel says that there is no such thing as too close.  The closer they get, the better the memory. This is just what Darrel wants to pass along to you.  The knowledge and ability to get Honkers to drop their landing gears over your decoys and in your face!

Darrel has been featured in virtually every major hunting publication and several smaller ones too. The then editor of Ducks Unlimited Magazine was once quoted in Peterson’s Hunting saying that no one on the face of this planet does it any better than Darrel Wise.  Darrel has also been on four outdoor television shows and several radio programs and he was recently the first professional guide to be picked to contribute to a new and upcoming column in Wildfowl Magazine on tips from the pros.   Darrel would like to show you a great time at his facility in Alberta and share his knowledge with you. A double win situation that you should definitely take advantage of!  The cumulative effect of many small details is the stuff that superstars are made of and it’s those kinds of details that Darrel will teach you when you hunt with him.

Darrel is one of the lucky few outfitter/guides who is still happily married.  His lovely and supportive wife of nearly 25 years, Cindy, runs her own goose related business, V-Line Productions.  Darrel and Cindy recently moved from Washington State to the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana to enjoy the abundant wildlife, incredible beauty, and to be closer to Alberta.
